Australian Cool Climate Wine Show
Last year I was invited to fill one of the judging positions at this week long show, and had an exhausting but highly rewarding week surrounded by ‘unknown’ samples of cool climate wine. I met some great people in the industry, largely from the Murrumbateman region where the show is held each year and offered my availability for this year.
A year has flown by and I have recently returned from another week of wine judging (late Sept 2015) and hosting master classes (an addition to the show week that was a huge success). As with all shows there is a ‘changing of the guards’ so I meet two new judges and many of the locals I had spent time with last year. It almost felt like ‘coming home’ with banter and jokes flying round from the moment we all arrived.
This year entries were just under the previous year, and with 550 wines to sample, review and rate in less than five days we had our work cut out for us. Certain classes always do well in this show by nature of it being ‘cool climate’ in focus, and the Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and sparkling classes were no exception. The number of wines we re-called for a second, and sometimes third look, showed the quality we were judging.
I would hate to think how many Riedel glasses were washed and polished in a week, it must be in the tens of thousands. A mention must be made of the stewards who worked tirelessly to keep us in supply of samples and glasses. In addition for those who fed us for the week, a big thank you! The core committee of Virginia, John, Chrissy and Marnie were fantastic, often at the venue by 7am to set up and with us at dinner each night, ensuring we were well looked after.
The awards night was a success, held at the newly renovated Crisps Lane Café in Murrumbateman. Results from the show are detailed below:
